Anonymous epitome (summary) of a lost treatise by Sharaf al-Dīn al-Muẓaffar ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī (Sharaf al-Din al-Muzaffar ibn Muhammad al-Tusi; d. 1213) on cubic equations fundamental to algebraic geometry (see the epitomiser's preface, f. 35, lines 2-7, transcribed below and edited by Rashed in Sharaf al-Dīn Muẓaffar ibn Muḥammad Ṭūsī,
Available mathematics: algebra and geometry at XII.
, vol. 1 [Paris: Les Belles Lettres, 1986], p. 2).
The text contains numerous diagrams, which are collected on a fold out (f. 180r) following the text.
Begins (f. 35v, lines 2-7):
As for praising and praising God Almighty and blessings upon His Messenger Muhammad and his family, I meant
In this book, I summarize the art of algebra and contrast and refine the words that came to my attention
The virtuous and greatest philosopher, Sharaf al-Din al-Muzaffi bin Muhammad al-Tusi, and the transformation of his words
From excessive circumvention to the point of moderation, and the tables that he drew in the work of calculations were dropped
Derivation of issues due to its distance from nature and its summoning over a long period of time leads to confusion and is proven
How to extract issues by research and combine work and proof and call it equations
Ends (f. 179r, lines 5-9):
...If we extract the required cube problem and money, it is adjusted
So we increase the required number that exceeds the first required, so whatever happens is the answer
The greatest, and if we extract what is required is a cube problem and a number equivalent to money, then it decreases
What is required comes out of the first requirement, and whatever remains is the smaller answer
