Notes	A manual on horsemanship and veterinary medicine in many short sections (باب), covering the handling of weapons on horseback and the treatment of diseases of the horse. It was written by by Badr al-Dīn Baktūt al-Rammāḥ al-Khāzindārī al-Ẓāhirī (بدر الدين بكتوت الرماح الخازنداري الظاهري, d. 1311), nāʼib of Alexandria (see f. 261, lines 2-3 transcribed below). Its composition was begun in the citadel of ʻAkkā during the reign of Sulṭān Qalāwūn (قلاوون, r. 1279-90, see f. 278v, line 21- f. 279r, line 3). A preface lists the contents of the treatise (ff. 261v-262r). Beginnings (f. 261v, lines 2-4): This is what the poor servant, Badr al-Din, wrote to God Almighty, written on “Al-Zamah” [!] Al-Khazindar [J] Al-Dhahiri is known for standing on the saddle and horse handles A driver on his way, wielding his spear and playing with his sword... Ends (f. 279r, lines 5-14): ...and this is what he benefited from It was composed and compiled by the poor servant of God Almighty, Badr al-Din Baktut al-Rimh Al-Khazandari Al-Dhahiri, known for standing on saddlebags The horse is a strong driver, and he drives with his spear and plays with his sword, so may God have mercy on him Whoever reads it and benefits from equestrian science or horse treatment May God have mercy on Baktut Al-Rammah, one of the men of Al-Mansoura Circle in Guarded Egypt, may God have mercy on him And have mercy on whomever you have mercy on, and pray for forgiveness and mercy for him and for all Muslims, and I advise you O one who has this book in his hand, he does not give it to everyone and he does not give it to anyone except whoever it is Mujahid for the sake of God or for someone who knows the amount of words in it, and praise be to God Lord of the worlds, and may God’s blessings and peace be upon our master Muhammad, his family and companions
