Notes
Anonymous gloss (commentary, see f. 73v, line 2) on the commentary by Badr al-Dīn Abū ‘Abd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Shāfi‘ī al-Miṣrī al-Dimashqī (Badr al-Din Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Shafi’i al-Masri al-Dimashqi, b. 1423, d. 1490), known as Sibṭ al-Māridīnī (tribe of al-Māridīnī), timekeeper (timekeeper) of the al-Azhar Mosque at Cairo, on a treatise in 20 bābs (doors) on using the sine quadrant (answering quarter) by the latter's grandfather Jamāl al-Dīn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khalīl ibn Yūsuf al-Māridīnī (Jamal al-Din Abdullah bin Khalil bin Yusuf al-Māridīnī, d. 1406).
Two diagrams are found at f. 75r, while spaces were left on ff. 88v-89r for three diagrams that were not added.
Another copy of the text appears in the present volume (ff. 17v-39r)
Beginnings (f. 73r, lines 12-13):
Praise be to God who made times reasons for the necessity of prayer, just as he made prayer the mainstay of religion and the center of the sky
The world is adorned with the stars, and He has beautified it for those who see it, and He has placed in it constellations and stations so that you may know the number of years and the reckoning
Ends (f. 94v, lines 10-12):
...We ask God Almighty to make us sincere to His noble face and to benefit us with what He has taught us
And may He gather us in the group of the best of people, and may blessings and peace be upon our master Muhammad and his family, companions, wives and descendants.
In principle and in conclusion, may God’s blessings and peace be upon our master Muhammad and his family and companions
