Comprehensive introduction to medicine by Dāwūd ibn ‘Umar al-Qaṣīr al-Anṭākī (Dāwūd ibn Umar al-Qusayr of Antioch, d. 1599).
The treatise is composed of an introduction, eight chapters each further subdivided into parts, studies and sections, followed by a conclusion.
Introduction, ff. 3r-10v;
Chapter One: Universal principles by which bodies remain healthy, bodily constituents, the definition and subject matter of medicine and how it was derived from wisdom.
Chapter Two: Causes (Chapter Two on Causes, ff. 55v-72r);
Chapter Three: Conditions of the human body (Chapter Three on the conditions of the human body, ff. 72r-88r);
Chapter Four: Classification of symptoms (Chapter Four, detailing the signs, ff. 88r-119r);
Chapter Five: General priniples and admonitions (Chapter Five on Laws and Commandments, ff. 119r-127r);
Chapter Six: Internal diseases specific to each part from head to foot
Chapter Seven: External diseases (Chapter Seven on External Diseases, ff. 192r-195r);
Chapter Eight: Diseases not specific to any particular place (Chapter Eight: Diseases not specific to any particular place, ff. 195r-209v);
Conclusion (Conclusion, ff. 209v-217v).
Begins (f. 1v, lines 2-5):
Glory be to Him to whom the foreheads of small bodies prostrated themselves and mixed with His wisdom to produce by Him
The humours are submissive and compact. I bestow upon the organs the influx of clinging spirits
He made actions the goals of the triangular powers, seven of the square powers, for the wisdom of connection
And the ninth of the total is like the original number in the rules of control, so praise is due to Him in and of itself
Ends (f. 217v, lines 18-26):
...And likewise the love of the tree of Mary, each one in the year of this
The last thing we mentioned was a summary of the delightful excursion to sharpen minds
And adjusting the moods of what happened in this regard according to what is possible
The situation and time require it, and whoever wants an increase should remind us
In it, we expanded the discussion on medicine and related sciences, and may God’s blessings and peace be upon him
Our Master Muhammad and his family and companions and peace be upon him
And upon all the prophets
And the messengers
