Notes A short untitled treatise on archery by Yūsuf ibn Muḥammad al-Jūkhī al-Mawṣilī (Yūsuf ibn Muhammad al-Jawkhi al-Mawsili, dates unknown) in the tradition of al- Kitāb al-wāḍiḥ fī al-ramy wa-al-nushshāb (The Clear Book on Archery and Crossbows) by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭabarī (Abd al-Rahman ibn Ahmad Tabari, active ca 9th century), who is mentioned on f. 1v. The volume has been trimmed and repaired, resulting in losses to the side-headings in the margins. Contents: The fundamental points [in bow-shooting] (Fundamentals, ff. 2r-2v); Faults in shooting (Question on the faults of shooting, ff. 3r-4v); Propositions on the principles of archery (thirty-one are cited but there are only thirty in the text), compiled by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sulaymān al-Yamanī (Abdullah ibn Sulaymān al-Yamanī, ff. 4v-23r). Begins (f. 1v, lines 2-5): The professor said Youssef bin Muhammad Al-Joukhi Al-Mosili, may God forgive him From him, the imams of throwing stones after Saad Ibn Abu Waqqas, may God be pleased with him, three... Ends (f. 23r, line 3-f. 23v, line 5): ...what was it to Strength and solidity are more eloquent than the left Suitable for those with energy and throwing at me Strong bows because arrows are different Soft and left-handed bow arrows fit for holders Soft bows, and God knows best what is right And to Him is the reference and the source May God’s blessings and peace be upon our master Muhammad, his family and companions Much appreciated And it was completed
