Notes
Treatise on the observation of solar eclipses through a camera obscura by Abū ‘Alī al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥasan ibn al-Haytham (Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham; d. ca 1040).
The text is copied in a hand much coarser and less polished than that of the previous text in the manuscript, and was transcribed from a defective manuscript (a poor copy) according to the
colophon
Section at the end of a manuscript text.
(f. 285v, line 7, transcribed below).
The text contains spaces for four diagrams never inserted.
Beginnings (f. 283v, lines 1-2):
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Editing the article on the image of the eclipse. It was quoted from Ibn Haitham’s views, which are five purposes. An introduction. Ibn Haitham said, “There may be an image of sunlight at the time of its eclipse if it penetrates through a narrow, circular hole.”
It ends with a crescent-shaped surface opposite the hole, if the remaining part of the sun's body is crescent-shaped...
Ends (f. 285v, lines 6-7):
...The image of its color appears in the direction opposite the hole, forming a shape resembling its shape, moving in a different direction, and from all of what has been mentioned, it is clear why
Sunlight penetrating through narrow holes appears round on parallel surfaces, although the shape of the hole always appears in the shape of the hole if it is wide, and moonlight is always seen in the shape of the holes.
