Notes Medical encyclopedia by Najm al-Dīn Maḥmūd ibn Ṣā’in al-Dīn Ilyās al-Shīrāzi (Najm al-Dīn Mahmoud bin Sa’in al-Din Ilyas al-Shirazi, d. 730/1330; see text in shamsa on f. 2r). This copy was produced for ‘Abd al-Raḥīm ibn Ibrāhīm (Abdul Rahim ibn Ibrahim, see text in lower cartouches on ff. 1v-2r) by Maḥmūd ibn ‘Umar ibn Abī Bakr (Mahmoud ibn Omar ibn Abi Bakr, see colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , f. 457v, line 13, transcribed below), and was completed during the first third of Shawwāl 731/July 1331, one year after the author's death. The text is divided into five books (articles) each subdivided into numerous chapters (sections), and a table of contents appears on ff. 3v-12r: Book One: Diseases Occurring From Head to Foot Book Two: Fevers (the second treatise on fevers; ff. 187r-232v [27 chapters]); Book Three: Diseases Occurring in External Body Parts (ff. 232v-333r [107 chapters]); Book Four: Well-known Simple Medicines - and we have avoided discussing rare ones (The fourth article is about famous individual medicines and we refrained from mentioning the strange ones; ff. 333v-374r [28 chapters - one for each letter of the Arabic alphabet]); Book Five: Rules for Composing Compound Medicines, How to Compound them and How to Use them. Begins (f. 2v, lines 1-4): Praise be to God, the One, the Most Glorious, the Most Gloryful, the Creator of the jinn and mankind, the Lord of the angels And the spirit from which the creations of beings appeared and by which they are revealed and blessings be upon Muhammad is a sweet blessing, from which the scent of roses wafts, and upon his family and companions as long as it lasts The clay on the graves wails... Ends (f. 457v, lines 5-7): Of saffron, half a dirham, and of pulp of bread torn by hand and sifted As much as possible, stir well and garnish with peeled almonds and pistachios And God knows best what is right, and to Him is the return and the return Colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text.
