Notes A treatise in Persian on the legality of music, written by Muḥammad ibn Jalāl Riz̤avī, in 1028/1618-19 (f. 2v, line 11). The text, also entitled Risālah-yi dar aqwāl-i fuqahāʼ dar samāʻ-i alḥān (Treatise on the sayings of jurists in Sama' al-Han, f. 2r), discusses the opinions of the great Sunni jurists and of the most celebrated Sufis for and against listening to music. It concludes with a khātimah (f. 13v) on the proper rules to be observed in the practice of sacred music. Begins (f. 2v, lines 1-2): The song of incomparable gratitude is for God, the servant of God, who is the master of love He bestowed favors on him and honored the companions of the truth as the authorities of the Sunnah... Ends (f. 15r, lines 19-20): ... poetry and all questions and religion and religion And connect me with a question and my religion, and you are my world, you are my desire, and I am a hindrance to my pleasures, and I am the choice of my pleasure
