A manual by Badr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad Sibṭ al-Māridīnī (Badr al-Dīn Muhammad ibn Muhammad Sibt al-Māridīnī, b. 1423, d. after 1497) on the calculation of the movements of celestial bodies with arcminute precision. In an introduction, ten chapters and a conclusion (Conclusion, f. 19v), the text summarizes and simplifies an introductory work by al-Māridīnī's teacher, Aḥmad ibn Rajab Ibn al-Majdī (Aḥmad ibn Rajab ibn al-Majdi, b. 1366, d. 1447) entitled
Kashf al-ḥaqāʼiq fī ḥisāb al-daraj wa-al-daqāʼiq
(Revealing the facts regarding the calculation of stairs and minutes, see f. 2v, lines 10-12).
The copy also preserves extensive calculation tables (ff. 2r and 22v-25r).
F. 2r is stamped with ownership seals of Muṣṭafá Ṣidqī (Mustafa Sidqi; see Provenance).
Begins (f. 2v, lines 2-6):
Praise be to God, praise be to those who are thankful, and I bear witness that there is no god but God alone, with no partner
The testimony of the sincere, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant, His Messenger, and Master
The messengers, may God’s prayers and peace be upon them all, and may God Almighty be pleased with them
On the authority of the Companions and the Successors and those who followed them in goodness until the Day of Judgment and after
So the poor, may God have mercy on him, says, Muhammad, the grandson of al-Mardini, the appointed Shafi’i...
Ends (f. 21v, lines 17-24):
...And now, through the grace and help of God Almighty, what we wanted to do has been completed for us
In this introduction, its rules were established and its problems were clarified and refined
His doors, his ways were refined, and his examples were liberated
Praise be to God for all the blessings and prayers
Peace be upon our master Muhammad
Master of the Arabs and Persians and his family
And his companions are deserving of credit
And generosity, and God is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs, and there is no power or strength except in God, the Most High, the Great
