Notes Commentary by ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Ḥusaynī al-Jurjānī (Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Husseini al-Jurjānī; d. 1413), known as al-Sayyid al-Sharīf (Sayyid al-Sharīf) on the Kitāb al-Tadhkirah fī al-hayʾah (Kitab al-Tizkirah fi al-Hiyyah; see British Library, MS Or. 11209) a treatise on the astronomical system presented in the Almagest of Ptolemy (Claudius Ptolemaeus; c 90-c 168) by Naṣīr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī (Naṣīr al-Dīn Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Tusi; d. 1274). The commentary follows the structure of the text commented upon, divided into four books (books) each subdivided into chapters (sections). It contains numerous diagrams throughout, including of the so-called 'Tusi couple' (ff. 48v-49r [Book Two, Chapter Eleven]), which demonstrates how linear motion can result from circular motion. The composition of the text was originally completed at Maragha in the early part of Dhū al-Qaʿdah 659/September-October 1261. The present copy was completed in a location described by the epithet Dār al-Amān (Dar al-Aman) on 19 Shawwāl 831/1 August 1428 by ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn ʿUmar (Umar ibn Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Umar), from a copy completed in the middle of Dhū al-Ḥijjah 811/April-May 1409 in Shiraz (see colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , f.100v transcribed below). Begins (f. 1v, lines 1-4): On him we trust and rely Blessed is he who made in the sky the opposite of ranks and effects and its wings with the opposite of lights And the manifestation of power in it by your great wisdom seven cars all in the sky subhun and the highest picture by your power al-Kamla return Daware Ahmad Rabham Subhoon.
