Notes	Unique copy of the oldest surviving comprehensive treatise on military archery by Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Aḥmad al-Ṭabarī (Abu Muhammad Abd al-Rahman Ahmad al-Tabari, active ca 9th century), missing the first part of the text. This treatise became a major source for subsequent furūsīyah texts. In numerous chapters (sections), the treatise details the types of bows, arrows, quivers, cords, and thumb-rings; methods of shooting; training the novice; shooting at the birjās (target used in mounted manoeuvres); use of incendiary devices; the requirements of a good archer; the archer's faults, injuries and their remedies; bracing the bow; hints for archers in times of war; shooting at and from a fortress; night-shooting, and hunting birds. Four small sketches illustrate types of arrows (ff. 36r, 38r, 38v and 40r). Begins (f. 1r, lines 1-3): Bows, strings, crossbows, and crossbows The employer wins and the good shooter who... He knows the defect of his body, the defect of his bow, and the defect of his string Ends (f. 55r, lines 3-9): Hunting sparrows and whole birds You take asafoetida, wet it with water, and put it in that Water is a bit of honey, then I soak it for a day and a night Throw (!) that love at the birds, for it confuses them and makes them difficult It cannot fly, and if you want it to recover, give it water Milk and mix it with ghee, and God is the grantor of all of that May God’s blessings be upon our master Muhammad and his family
