Notes
Medical treatment by Amīn al-Daulah Abū al-Faraj ibn Ya‘qūb ibn Isḥāq ibn al-Quff (Amin al-Dawla Abu al-Faraj ibn Yaqoub ibn Ishaq ibn al-Quff, d. 1286). The treated Baibars al-Bunduqdari, reg. 1260-77).
A list of the fifty-nine sections (chapters) of the treatise is given on ff. 6r-7v, but this manuscript contains a sixtieth section on physiognomy. This copy is defective at the end.
Begins (f. 5v, lines 2-5):
The poor one said to God Almighty, Abu Al-Faraj bin Yaqoub, known as Ibn Al-Qaff Al-Christian
Praise be to God, the Holy One of the attributes and names, the One who determines the disease and the cure, the One who erases the dead
The Creator of the living, the Creator of symptoms and essences, above all taxes and appearances
He blessed animals with their sustenance, singled out man for his virtue of speech, and may God bless his elite among his creation
Ends (f. 180v, lines 14-17, defective at end):
...too much hip flesh
Evidence of weak strength. Thick legs are evidence of idiocy and rudeness. The accuracy of the heel
Evidence of cowardice and harshness is evidence of gluttony. A gentle foot is evidence of its owner
He has a debaucherous temperament and a large amount of meat is evidence of misunderstanding if his steps are quick and short
