Notes Commentary by ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAli al-Ḥusaynī al-Jurjānī (Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Husayni al-Jurjani; d. 1413), known as al-Sayyid al-Sharīf (Al-Sayyid al-Sharif), on the al-Mulakhkhaṣ fī ‘ilm al-hayʾah al-basīṭah (Summary of simple body science), an elementary textbook of astronomy by Sharaf al-Dīn Maḥmūd ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Umar al-Jaghmīnī al-Khwārizmī (Sharaf al-Dīn Mahmoud ibn Muhammad ibn Umar al-Jaghmini al-Khwarizmi; fl. early 13th century). The text contains numerous diagrams. The copy was completed on 26 Dhū al-Ḥijjah 822/13 January 1420 (see colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , f. 52r, lines 10-13, transcribed below). Begins (f. 4v, lines 1-3): Your help, O helper, and upon You we rely. Glory be to You, O God, the Director of the heavens without pillars and pegs On the pole and the axis, and oh adorned with the bodies of the upper things, with constants, drives, and yoke The greatest and the smallest... Ends (f. 52r, lines 7-9): Then they multiplied that by twelve, so the days of the lunar year were three hundred and fifty-four One day, five days, and one sixth, and this year is ten days less than the Hanafi solar year (?). Approximately twenty and a half hours, and God knows best what is correct Colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. (f. 52r, lines 10-13): The writing was done with God’s help and good success The twenty-sixth of Dhul-Hijjah is the year Twenty-two Eight hundred
