Notes Fragment of a general guide to medicine by al-Muwaffiq Shams al-Riyāsah abū al-‘Ashā’ir Hibat Allāh ibn Zayn (Al-Muwaffaq Shams al-Riyasah Abu al-Asha’ir Hibat Allah ibn Zayn; d. 1198) known as Ibn Jumay’ (Ibn All), personal physician to the sultan of Egypt and Syria Saladin (Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi; d. 1193). The work is divided into four books (articles), and this copy contains Book One, chapters one to seven and ten to thirty-eight out of a total fifty chapters. Folios 39r-41r contain a detailed table of contents. Beginnings (f. 41v, lines 1-57): Chapter one In the limit and purpose of medicine [...] Some of the crafts are those whose purpose is only knowledge, such as natural science It is called theoretical sciences and artefacts, including what they are intended to do Doing something like industry, and active crafts are called... Ends (f. 78v, lines 12-14): ...And therefore the eminent physician Galen says that (particularly?) Knowing some of the benefits of the guard organs (?) without taking action Therefore, the benefit for them (?) consists of knowing the active member
