Notes	Anonymous gloss (commentary, see f. 17v, line 12) on a commentary by Badr al-Dīn Abū ‘Abd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Shāfi‘ī al-Miṣrī al-Dimashqī (Badr al-Dīn Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Shafi’i al-Masri al-Dimashqī, b. 1423, d. 1490), known as Sibṭ al-Māridīnī (tribe of al-Māridīnī), timekeeper (timekeeper) of the al-Azhar Mosque at Cairo, on a treatise in 20 bābs (doors) on using the sine quadrant (the answering quarter), by the latter's grandfather Jamāl al-Dīn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khalīl ibn Yūsuf al-Māridīnī (Jamal al-Din Abdullah bin Khalil bin Yusuf al-Māridīnī, d. 1406). Spaces were left for three diagrams (ff. 31r-31v). Another copy of the text appears in the present volume (ff. 73r-94v). The text is followed by a folio of notes (f. 40). Beginnings (f. 17v, lines 2-4): Praise be to God, who made times reasons for the necessity of prayer, and also made prayer a pillar Religion and He filled the lower heaven with the adornment of the stars and adorned it for the observers and placed therein constellations and mansions To learn the number of years and arithmetic... Ends (f. 39r, lines 19-22): And we ask God... The Generous One is to make us pure for His noble face, to benefit us with what He has taught us, and to gather us in a group The best of peoples, and prayers and peace be upon our master Muhammad, his family, companions, and wives And his descendants, in principle and in conclusion, praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds
