(Astarlab Khati), an instrument also known as 'al-Ṭūsī's Rod' (Asaat al-Tusi), named after its inventor Sharaf al-Dīn al-Muẓaffar ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī (Sharaf al-Dīn al-Muzaffar ibn Muhammad). al-Tusi; d. The Comprehensive Guide to Practical Astronomy and Astronomical Instruments Jāmiʿ al-mabādiʾ wa-al-ghāyāt fī ʿilm al-mīqāt by Sharaf al-Din 13th century) devotes two chapters to the linear astrolabe Ancient instrument for astronomical observations. (ed. Carra de Vaux, 'L' astrolabe Ancient instrument for astronomical observations. linear or baton of al-Tusi', Asiatic Journal [1895]). An anonymous treatise on the linear astrolabe Ancient instrument for astronomical observations. preserved in MS IO Islamic 460 (ff. 2v-7v) is very similar to, but not identical with, al-Marrākushī's discussion of this instrument. After a short introduction, the treatise is divided into two parts (Qasman), each subdivided into five chapters (Abwab): Preface (ff. 86v-97r); Part 1: Use (first part in action; ff. 87r-97r); Chapter 1: The names of its divisions (Chapter I in Assamese Parts; ff. 87r-88r); Chapter 2: How to take an elevation (Chapter 2 in How to Take Elevation; ff. 88r-90r); Chapter 3: Knowing the date, time and ascension from the elevation of the sun and star (Chapter III in Knowledge of the Time, Hours and Ascension from the Elevation of the Sun and the Moon; ff. 90r-92r); Chapter 4: Equalizing (?) the twelve zodiacal signs (chapter four in the equation of the twelfth constellation; ff. 92r-93r); Chapter 5: Determining the Azimuth of the the qibla , the pole, the equator and the north and south points (the fifth chapter in the extraction of the apex of the qibla and the pole and the line of the sun and the north and south points; ff. 93r-97r); Part 2: Constructing this astrolabe Ancient instrument for astronomical observations.
