Notes
Every Thursday eight guests came to Cheheltan's parents' house to talk to his parents and later to himself about literature. They spoke primarily about classical Persian literature, about Rumi, Hafez, Saadi, Ferdowsi and others. These meetings lasted for years and opened up a space of language, poetry, interpretation regarding the great themes of life and spirit, connecting the participants but also entangling them with each other because the state power also ruled in their circle. During this period, since the 1960s, the Shah ruled with his repressive apparatus and the secret service SAVAK until the Islamic revolution of 1979 replaced the regime with the power of the mullahs. In his dense and detailed story, Amir Hassan Cheheltan returns again and again to the circle of literature lovers, the conversations about poetry, the role of his parents, the impulses for his own reading and the impact of literature. Because she is older, wiser, funnier, more subversive and far more sexually permissive than official morals and social constraints want to tolerate.
