Notes	Khaled Kahlifa's new novel is about Syria from the 1980s to today. His first novel, “Death is a Troublesome Business,” was a surprise success. Khalifa, who still lives in Damascus, writes about Syria from within, not from exile like most of his fellow writers. A family lives in the country. But when the father runs away to America with a younger woman, the mother moves back with her three children to Aleppo, where she grew up. The once thriving, liberal city has been changed by the Assad regime. The neighbors are now singing his songs, and his colleagues at the school where his mother works as a teacher are joining the party. Reports are written about outsiders. Mistrust and fear spread. At home, the mother tries to keep the memory of old Aleppo alive with its music, literature and the colorful bazaar. But reality penetrates ever deeper into the domestic world. A melancholic, touching book about a lost city and culture and a lesson about what can happen to freedoms that one took for granted.
