Notes
Watermark: No. 13/MILL. Text rubricated; contains thumbnail sketches of the constellations. Earliest date probably late 19th cent. based on appearance of paper and note in colophon with copyist's name, suggesting exemplar was in a library collection: nuqilat min ḍimn majmūʻah taṭ raqm 198 m mīqāt wa-nasakha dhālik al-ʻabd al-faqīr ... Maḥmūd Ṣidqī al-Nassākh. Purchased in Cairo, 1933/34. Owners' marks: inside cover, manuscript notes in handwriting of Max Meyerhof; inside cover, note in handwriting of Louis Charles Karpinski (?), "From Dr. Meyerhof in May, 1934.". Believed to have been lost, this work contains "an explanation of the system of the anwāʼ ['the acronychal setting of a star or constellation and the heliacal rising of its opposite (raqīb)'], a list of the mansions,... etc.; the explanation is accompanied by maxims and poetry." Charles Pellat, "Anwāʼ," Encyclopedia of Islam, v. i (Leiden, 1957), p. 523b.
