Ms. 947 Origin: As appears in colophon on p.122, copied by Aḥmad ibn al-Shaykh Muḥammad al-Ṭayyib with transcription completed 19 Ṣafar 1271 [ca. 11 November 1854]. Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 96 Binding: Boards covered in textured black cloth with black leather over spine (quarter binding) ; Western style binding ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in pink and green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "قصيدة الحريري ملحة الاعراب" ; sewn in white thread over two recessed cords ; overall in fairly good condition with minor abrasion and staining. Support: European laid paper of several types (all extremely well-burnished) ; opening type with 8-9 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 26 mm. apart (horizontal), and watermark of scrollwork / arms consisting of two-headed eagle with crown above, star and trefoil at center, and "G. C. C." below (see p.2, 10, 12, etc.), dark cream to beige in color, well-burnished to glossy ; another type with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 22-24 mm. apart (horizontal), and watermark of "GIOR MAGNANI" under scrollwork / arms with bird above tower (see p.22, 24, 30, 32, etc. and compare Heawood 3748 and Walz, "The Paper trade of Egypt and the Sudan," p.88), medium cream in color, well-burnished to glossy ; another type with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 26 mm. apart (horizontal), and watermark of "G M" under scrollwork (see p.50, etc.), dark cream to beige in color, well-burnished to glossy ; some staining, creases and tears. Decoration: Keywords and headings rubricated ; textual dividers in the form of inverted commas in red. Script: Naskh-nastaʻlīq (talik) ; clear, compact Turkish hand in a medium to bold line ; characteristically serifless with marked inclination to the right, mainly closed counters, some elongation of horizontal strokes, pointing in strokes rather than distinct dots, final yāʼ often unpointed. Layout: Written in 25 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation: i, 5 V(50), VI (62), i ; exclusively quinions with final senion ; quire numbering in the form of Hindu-Arabic numerals under letter kāf in upper margin of recto of opening leaf of each quire ; final leaf left blank ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals (supplied during digitization). Colophon: "Scribal," triangular, reads "تمت الملحة وشرحها نهار الجمعة المبارك لتسعة عشر يوما مضين من صفر سنة الف ومائتين واحدى وسبعين على يد الفقير الى الله سبحانه احمد بن الشيخ محمد الطيب غفر الله له ولوالديه ولمشايخه وللمسلمين اجمعين امين م" Explicit: "ثم الصلاة بعد حمد الصمد على النبي المصطفى محمد واله وصحبه الاخيار على روام الليل والنهار واله الأئمة الاخيار القانتين في الدجا الابرار" Incipit: "قال الشيخ الامام العالم العلامة ... ابو محمد القاسم بن علي الحريري ... اقول من بعد افتتاح القول بحمد ذي الطول شديد الحول ... الحد ما يمنع الشيء المحدود من الخروج عما حد به ويمنع غيره من الدخول فيه ومنه اشتقاق حدود الدار والحد في اللغة هو المنع ومنه سمي البواب حدادا لانه يمنعه الطارق من الدخول ..."
