Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 972 Origin: Lacks dated scribal colophon ; likely copied in Egypt in the late 1930s and eventually bound for James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974). Accompanying materials: Four small slips (from two trimmed bifolia) "tipped in" carrying (paginated pp.5-8, 39-42). Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 121 Binding: Boards covered in black textured cloth ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a geometric pattern (resembling a scale pattern) in dull gold ; cover gold-stamped with "الفلسفة العصرية" ; sewn in white thread, sewing failing, leaves loose ; overall in fairly good condition. Support: Wove paper of two different types, one medium cream to beige in color, the other brown ; some offset of ink on facing pages. Script: Ruqʻah ; quick, compact hand in a medium to bold line ; serifless and freely ligatured with mainly closed counters, effect of inclination to the right and of words descending to baseline, pointing somewhat careless and in strokes rather than distinct dots. Layout: Written in 18-21 lines per page. Collation: i, IX+1 (19), i ; some leaves left partially blank ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes inserts / trimmed bifolia). Title from inscription on 'title page' (p.1). Ms. codex. On upper pastedown label with ex libris of James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974), stamped with inventory number, "Ex Libris | J. Heyworth-Dunne | D. Lit. (London) | No. 7916" ; UM Library inscription on p.3 "Dunning | Heyworth-Dunne | 6-11-51 | 71955.". Copy of a selection of philosophical excerpts apparently intended as an aide-mémoire addressing Benjamin Rand's (1856-1934) Modern classical philosophers (see p.9), Henri Bergson's (1859-1941) Evolution créatrice (see p.31), al-Fārābī's ʻUyūn al-masāʼil (see p.34), etc., ending abruptly. Compare pp.129-143 in Isl. Ms. 933.
