Ms. 587 Origin: As appears in colophon on p.414, transcription completed 24 Muḥarram 1072 [ca. 19 September 1661]. Accompanying materials: Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas. Former shelfmark: Neither "IL" number nor "M." number apparent on volume. Uncertain whether actually a Yahuda acquisition, but an acquisitions slip in the administrative files (for a majmūʻah "M. 20") might have been intended for this volume. Binding: Pasteboards (quite thin, semi-limp) covered in brown leather ; Type III binding (without flap) ; doublures in brown leather ; upper and lower covers carry blind-stamped scalloped mandorla (filled with vegetal composition compare Déroche class. OAi 13) along with tooled rule border ; sewn in lime-green thread, two stations ; only traces of headband remain ; overall in somewhat poor condition with lower cover completely detached at spine, lifting and losses of leather, much abrasion, staining, etc. Support: European laid paper of at least two types ; mainly with 10 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 25-27 mm. apart (horizontal), paschal lamb in four-lobed circle watermark (53 mm. tall, see p.401, 414, etc.), and "Td" under trefoil countermark (see p.412), well-burnished to glossy, light cream in color, sturdy though fairly thin and translucent ; occasionally a type with 7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 28 mm. apart (horizontal), and anchor in circle watermark ; staining and tide lines. Decoration: Keywords and section headings rubricated (text to be entered in red supplied in upper margin, occasionally visible) ; textual dividers in the form of red discs. Script: Naskh ; compact, angular Egyptian or 'Syrian' hand in a medium line ; virtually serifless with pointing mainly in strokes rather than distinct dots, some elongation of horizontal strokes, more rectilinear descenders. Layout: Written in 23 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation: V-1 (9), 19 V(199), V-1 (208) ; almost exclusively quinions ; catchwords present ; foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (mistakenly repeats p.23). Colophon: "Scribal," triangular, reads " اللهم صلي [صل] وسلم وبارك على اشرف عبادك سيدنا محمد وعلى اله وصحبه اجمعين وكان الفراغ من نسخه في رابع عشرين شهر محرم الحرام افتتاح عام اثنين وسبعين والف حسبنا الله ونعم الوكيل" Explicit: "قال ابو حنيفة والشافعي واحمد له ذلك وقال مالك لا يجوز له ذلك والله تعالى اعلم تم هذا الكتاب بحمد الله الملك الوهاب ... والحمد لله رب العالمين" Incipit: "الحمد لله الذي اجزل احسانه وانزل قرأنه وبين فيه قواعد دينه ... وبعد فان معرفة الاجماع واختلاف العلماء من اهم الاشياء وذلك اثر [امر] لازم في حق المجتهد والحكيم ...هذا مختصر ان شاء الله تعالى نافع كثير من مسائل الخلاف ... وسميته رحمة الامة في اختلاف الائمة ..." Inscription in black ink on upper cover "حسين خواجه ..." ; ownership statement dated 1072 [1661 or 2] on 'title page' (p.1) in name of ʻAbd Allāh ibn ʻAlī ( عبد الله بن علي )accompanied by oval seal impression, statement reads "ملك هذا المجموع العبد الفقير الى الله القدير عبد الله بن علي غفر الله له ولوالديه ولجميع المسلمين آمين يا رب العالمين م في سنة ١٠٧٢" ; another ownership statement dated 23 Jumādá I 1195 [ca. 17 May 1781] on 'title page' (p.1) in name of al-Sayyid Muḥammad Asʻad ( السيد محمد اسعد ; Seyit Mehmet Esat), qāḍī / kadı in Diyarbakır (آمد) [?] accompanied by oval seal impression, statement reads "تملك هذا الكتاب العبد الداعي السيد محمد اسعد القاضي بمدينة آمد [؟] في سنة خمس وتسعين ومائة والف في ۲۳ حا سنة ۱۱٩٥" ; marginal corrections.. Fine copy of the treatise on disputed legal questions among the different madhāhib.
