Notes
About: Careful copy of what appears to be the opening sections of an abridgment of Mullā Ṣadrā Shīrāzī's (d.1641) al-Mabdaʼ wa-al-maʻād (compare Isl. Mss. 979 and 965). | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 980
Origin: Lacks dated scribal colophon ; likely copied in Egypt in the late 1930s and bound for James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974).
Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 129
Binding: Boards covered in black textured cloth ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a geometric pattern (resembling a scale pattern) in olive green or dull gold ; cover gold-stamped with "المبدأ والمعاد" ; stab sewn in white thread, tightly bound (gatherings difficult to discern and second section perhaps simply composed of individual leaves rather than gatherings of bifolia), some leaves loose ; overall in fairly good condition.
Support: Machine wove paper of two different types, both sturdy, cream in color.
Decoration: Text executed almost entirely in red ink.
Script: Ruqʻah ; quick, compact hand in a thin line ; serifless and freely ligatured with effect of inclination to the left and of words descending to baseline, mainly closed counters, pointing somewhat careless and in strokes rather than distinct dots, final yāʼ usually unpointed.
Layout: Written in 9-11 lines per page.
Collation: Cathwords present ; pages between two main sections left blank (see pp.48-49) ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.
