About: Fine copy of a selection of four of the maqāmāt composed by the famous and prolific author and scholar, al-Suyūṭī (d.1505). Origin: As appears at close on p.69 (in what seems to be a different hand), transcription completed end of Ṣafar 1011 [August 1602].
Accompanying materials: Acquisitions slip from Yahuda.
Former shelfmark: From inner front cover and label on lower cover, "IL 356" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip).
Binding: Pasteboards covered in marbled paper (in dark blue, green, red, yellow, and orange on white) with spine, fore edge flap, and edges/turn-ins in light brown leather (framed binding) ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in orange-tinted laid paper ; sewn in light yellow thread, four stations, many threads broken ; overall in fair condition with some abrasion, staining, minor lifting and losses of leather, etc. ; fully detached from text block.
Support: European laid paper with 8 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 28-29 mm. apart (horizontal), and anchor in circle with leaf above watermark (50 mm. tall, see pp.6-7, etc.) ; well-burnished to glossy, sturdy.
Decoration: Headings and keywords rubricated ; textual dividers in the form of red discs.
Script: Naskh ; clear Egyptian or 'Syrian' hand in a medium line ; virtually serifless with curvilinear descenders, pointing in distinct dots, hamzah used (al-hamzah al-mutawassiṭah al-maksūrah appears seated to the right of the pointed yāʼ, e.g. opening on p.18), occasional vocalization.
Layout: Written in 13 lines per page ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident).
Collation: III (6), 2 V(26), IV+1 (35) ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (before collation and while quires were out of order with second and third quire switched ; during collation correct pagination was added).
Colophon: [al-Maqāmah al-yāqūtīyah] "Scribal," reads "تمت بحمد الله وعونه وحسن توفيقه والحمد لله وحده وصلى الله على سيدنا محمد واله وسلم بتاريخ اواخر صفر الخير سنة احد عشر والف"
