Notes	About: The fourth volume of al-Baghawī's commentary on the Qur'an, from Surah Yasin (36) to Surah al-Nās (114). Lengthy extratextual quotations, notes, and glosses following the text and on slips tipped in or bound in various places (see fol.40-41, fol.85-86, fol.102-103, etc.). \| Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 456 Origin: As appears in colophon on fol.206b, copied ("wa-faragha min kitbatih [kitābatih ?]...") by Walī ibn Muṣṭafā ibn Isḥaq (Veli b. Mustafa b. İshak). Below the colophon, the date 906 [1500 or 1501] has been supplied ("Tarikha Sana Sta Wa Sa'ma'a"), perhaps by one of the glossators (compare gloss in upper margin and scribal verses in outer margin). A birth notice below the colophon ("The date of the birth of Abdi ibn Wali Khalifah [?] Sana'a Tas' and Ts'ama'a") is further dated 909 [1503 or 4], likely supplied by one of the glossators. Paper, hand, etc. are consistent with a late 15th century dating. Accompanying materials: Inventory cataloging slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas along with several slips tipped in or bound in (see fol.40-41, fol.85-86, fol.102-103, etc.). Former shelfmark: From inner front cover, "IL 344a" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip). Binding: Thin pasteboard covered in brown leather with red leather repairs ; once Type II binding (with flap) though only traces of fore-edge flap remain ; upper and lower covers carry large gold-stamped central mandorla (compare Déroche class. OAi6) with pendants and gold-stamped border ; board linings of marbled paper in blue, red, and white ; endpapers of marbled paper in red, blue, green, yellow, and purple ; in poor condition, though much repaired. Support: non-European (likely Arab) laid paper with chain lines running vertically and grouped in threes ; laid lines running horizontally and spaced roughly 9 laid lines per cm. ; endpapers of heavy European laid paper, chain lines clearly visible and spaced approximately 22-27 mm. apart, bearing watermark with crown, grapes (grapes) and name "VANANT" [?] Decoration: Sūrah headings and rubricated Qurʼānic excerpts. Script: Naskh ; clear, neat Turkish hand in a medium line ; entirely sans serif, rounded with curvilinear descenders, effect of slight tilt to the left, some elongation of horizontal strokes, pointing in distinct dots or strokes (representing three dots in particular), point of final nūn often assimilated with bowl ; glosses in various hands. Layout: Written in 25 inches per page ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident). Collation: 20V (200), III+1 (207); quinions followed by ternion with added leaf ; seventh quire has misplaced single bifolium, correctly paginated and now inserted between fol.63b and fol.64a (Western pagination) ; catchwords present but occasionally cut off due to trimming of leaves ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals (supplied during cataloguing, referenced in description). Colophon: "Scribal," triangular or trapezoidal, reads: "Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and peace and blessings be upon His good creation, Muhammad, His Companions, and His excellent and pure repentance Wali ibn Mustafa ibn Ishaq, may Allah forgive him and all of us.
