About: Fine copy of a treatise on Sufism and theological matters by Muḥammad Abū Thābit Ibn al-Rifāʻī al-Nahrawānī (d.1045/1635). | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 517
Origin: As appears at close on p.190, copied by one Muṣṭafá (Mustafa) from or on the authority of Ibn Aḥmad (İbn-i Ahmet) with transcription completed 15 Dhū al-Qaʻdah 1212 [ca. 1 May 1798].
Accompanying materials: a. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda (pp.1-2) -- b. Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas (pp.3-4).
Former shelfmark: From inscription on 'title page' (p.5) and label on lower cover, "IL 393" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip).
Binding: Pasteboards covered in dark olive green coated and textured paper with dark green-blue leather over spine ; Type III binding (without flap) ; doublures in shell marbled paper (in blue, brown, and yellow) ; sewn in yellow thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands red and yellow, fairly good condition with some damage ; overall in fair condition.
Support: European laid paper of at least two types ; opening type with 8 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 21-22 mm. apart (horizontal), three wishbones or stirrups [or inverted crescents?] and "A C" countermark (see p.6, 8, 52, 53, etc.) ; another type with 9 laid lines per cm. (vertial), chain lines spaced 23 mm. apart (horizontal), and "G F A" with eagle and three stylized hats watermarks (see p.148, 152, etc.).
Decoration: Keywords rubricated.
Script: Naskh ; elegant hand in a medium line ; virtually serifless with slight effect of tilt to the left, mainly open counters, curvilinear descenders ; freely ligatured and somewhat casually pointed (with many mistakes) ; partially vocalized.
Layout: Written in 11 lines per page ; frame-ruled.
Collation: 8 V (80), VI (92), I (94) ; chiefly quinions ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes inserts and skips two pages between pp.43 and 44).
Colophon: "اثر خامه [؟] مصطفى عن ابن احمد در راه كتخدايى راه ايى زاده سنه اثنين عشر وماتين والف في ۱٥ شهر ذق ..."
Explicit: "واجعل اللهم ثواب ذلك نجاة لي ولاخواني من النار يا مهيمن يا ستار امين والحمد لله رب العالمين"
Incipit: "الحمد لله الواجب الوجود الذي شهد بوجوده كل من في الاكوان ... اما بعد فيقول العبد الفقير الى رحمة ربه القدير ... محمد ابو ثابت ابن الرفاعي ان هذا الكتاب تذكرة للعاقل وتنبيها للغافل ... وسميتها النصيحة المحبين وروضة الموحدين ..."
