About: Fine Maghribī copy of the commentary by Zayn al-Dīn Khālid ibn ʻAbdallāh al-Azharī (d.1499) upon Ibn Hishām's popular grammatical textbook, Qawāʻid al-iʻrāb, followed by a commentary by Abū ʻAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Sanūsī (d.1490) upon his own ʻAqīdat ahl al-tawhīd al-ṣughrá, or Umm al-barāhīn, on the essentials of faith. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Origin: As appears in colophon on p.76, opening work copied by Aḥmad al-Hānī al-Hilālī with transcription completed 1130 [1717 or 18]. As appears in colophon on p.188, transcription of second work completed around the time of the mawlid (birthday of the Prophet) 1188 [1774].

Binding: Pasteboards covered in block-printed paper (rows of interlaced curves in red, studded with aquamarine accents in dots and strokes, all on a bright orange ground) with brown leather over spine, fore edge flap, and edges/turn-ins (framed binding) ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in untinted paper ; tooled accents on fore edge flap ; sewn in cream thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in mauve and cream, good condition ; text block trimmed around marginalia ; overall in fair condition with some abrasion, staining, cover detaching at spine, etc.
Support: European laid paper ; mainly with 9 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 25 mm. apart (horizontal), and three crescents watermark (88 mm. long, perpendicular to chains, see p.14, 26, 34, 35, etc.), sturdy and well-burnished ; another type with 6-7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 31 mm. apart (horizontal), and three crescents watermark (82 mm. long, perpendicular to chains, see p.108, etc.), sturdy and somewhat thick, burnished.
Decoration: Keywords and section headings rubricated ; written area of incipit and facing page of opening work surrounded by red rule-border.
Script: Maghribī ; two main hands ; hand supplying opening work quite neat and uniform, exhibiting little deviation from the vertical and adhering closely to the baseline, with characteristic sweeping descenders, etc. ; hand supplying second work less uniform, occasional tilt to the right or left, etc. ; opening leaf of second work seemingly supplied in a different hand.
Layout: Written in 23 and 24 lines per page ; frame-ruled.
Collation: ii, 3 V(30), II (34), I (36), V-1+1 (46), V (56), IV (64), V (74), IV (82), V (92) ; chiefly quinions ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes flyleaves).
