Notes
About: Careful copy of the second of seven volumes (v.1 and v.4 now lacking) of the commentary by Shaykhʻzādah Muḥammad ibn Muṣṭafá al-Qūjawī (d.1544 or 5) upon al-Bayḍāwī's commentary on the Qurʼān, Anwār al-tanzīl wa-asrār al-taʼwīl, covering Sūrat al-Baqarah (2) through Sūrat Āl ʻUmrān (3). Possibly acephalous and ends abruptly. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 463 v.2
Origin: As appears at close on p.454, opening section (close of Sūrat al-Baqarah) dated 987 [1579 or 80]. Further sections on anchor in circle marked paper likely contemporary ; sections on eagle "GFA" marked paper suggest 19th century.
Accompanying materials: a. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda (for the set as extant, this and Isl. Ms. 463 v.3, Isl. Ms. 463 v.5, Isl. Ms. 463 v.6 and Isl. Ms. 463 v.7) -- b. Scrap of grid paper with portion of drawing and notes (between pp.454-455).
Former shelfmark: From inner front cover, "IL 91 II" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip).
Binding: Pasteboards now covered in dull yellow paper and green-blue paper-backed cloth with dark olive green leather over spine ; Type II binding (originally with flap, though now lost) ; board linings in brown wove paper ; sewn in dark pink thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in cream or light yellow and dull pink, good condition ; overall in poor condition with flap apparently lost, lifting and losses of cloth and paper, abrasion, staining, delamination of boards, etc. ; housed in box for protection.
Support: European laid paper of at least two main types appearing in different sections ; opening through p.42 and pp.165-456 in a type with 10 laid lines per cm. (horizontal), chain lines spaced 27-29 mm. apart (vertical), and anchor in circle with star above watermark (68 mm. tall, see p.8, 456, etc.), sturdy, crisp and fairly thick, well-burnished to glossy ; pp.43-164 and pp.457-536 in another type with 10-11 laid lines per cm. (horizontal), chain lines spaced 27 mm. apart (vertical), and eagle with wings spread watermark ("GFA" below, see p.46, etc.), thin and fairly transluscent, burnished.
Decoration: Keywords, abbreviation symbols (mainly two teeth stroke above notable words), some notabilia (sideheads) and section headings rubricated ; overlining in red ; occasional textual dividers in the form of red discs.
Script: Naskh and nastaʻlīq (talik) ; at least four main Turkish hands ; all mainly serifless and fairly compact ; opening and other hands showing some influence of nastaʻlīq with effect of words descending to baseline, elongation of horizontal strokes, etc.
Layout: Written in 29 lines per page.
Collation: i, 7 V(70), V+1 (81), 8 V(161), IV (169), I+1 (172), 5 V(222), II+1 (227), 4 V(267), i ; chiefly quinions ; leaves between sections (pp.455-457) left blank ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes flyleaves).
