Notes About: Careful though incomplete copy of Ibn Sīnā's (d.1037) al-Ishārāt wa-al-tanbīhāt. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 998 Origin: Lacks dated colophon, though likely copied in Egypt in the late 1930s and eventually bound for James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974). As appears on 'title page' for section five (see p.99), copied by the anonymous "ا ع" who has identified himself as the copyist of other manuscripts eventually bound for James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974), see Isl. Ms. 905, Isl. Ms. 910, Isl. Ms. 937, Isl. Ms. 981, Isl. Ms. 988 and likely Isl. Ms. 929. Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 147 Binding: Boards covered in dark green cloth with black leather over spine (quarter binding) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "متن الاشارات | J.H.D." ; sewn in cream thread over three recessed cords ; stuck-on endbands (blue and white stripe) ; overall in fairly good condition. Support: Wove paper. Script: Ruqʻah ; quick, compact hand in a bold line ; serifless and freely ligatured with effect of inclination to the left and of words descending to baseline, mainly closed counters, pointing somewhat careless and in strokes rather than distinct dots, final yāʼ usually unpointed. Layout: Written mainly in 11-13 lines per page. Collation: i, IV (8), V (18), VIII (34), VII (48), VI (60), 3 VIII(108), i ; an assortment of gatherings with several octonions ; blank pages left between sections (each corresponding to a gathering) with some serving as 'title pages' for those sections (see pp.3, 19, 39, 71, 99, etc.) ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes flyleaves). Explicit: "ولعلك تقول ايضا فان كان القدر فلم العقاب فتأمل جواب ان العقاب للنفس على خطيئتها كما ستعلم فهو كالمرض للبدن على نهمه فهو لازم من لوازم ما ساق اليه الاحوال الماضية التي لم يكن من وقوعها بد ولا من وقوع ما يتبعها واما الذي يكون على جهة اخرى من مبدء له من خارج فحديث اخر" Incipit: "الحمد لله رب العالمين وصلى الله على سيدنا محمد وآله وبعد فهذه اشارات الى اصول وتنبيهات على جمل يستبصر بها من تيسر له ولا ينتفع بالاصرح منها من تعسر عليه وعلى الله التكلان ..."
