(1b) Praise be to God who granted a horoscope... As for what follows, the forty which were reported by the sheikh, the imam, the illustrious friend, the guardian of God Almighty, without dispute, and the one who adhered to the Shafi’i school of thought without defense, Muhyi al-Din Abu Zakaria Yahya bin Sharaf al-Din al-Nawawi... (308a) Its author, the learned Imam, the learned scholar, al-Bahr al-Fahamah, said, “The Collector of the Diversity of Virtues”... and I finished it with the crescent of Muharram in the year nine hundred and fifty-one... and the completion of writing it fell on the third day. The blessed second month of Ramadan in the year one thousand one hundred and eighteen at the hands of the poor Muhammad Al-Mesiri Al-Shafi’i... Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.
