Notes
These are two pages from a calligraphic Quran written in maghrebi script, dating to the 18th century, and a good example of the symbiosis between Hispano-Islamic and Ottoman influences. Although the script and the colour of the diacritics are typically maghrebi, the decoration and the frontispiece of the fatiha, which is adorned with floral motifs, shows the clear influence of the Ottoman school, which was itself inspired by Iranian art. The vowels are written in red, thesukunand theshaddain blue, thehamzain yellow or gold and thehamza al-waslin green.
