Notes Significantly defective, yet extremely rare fragment of an early recension for an untitled anthology of poetic compositions in varied forms and genres closely resembling the But'khānah , originally compiled from the works of under a hundred ancient and modern poets (omitting biographies) by the poet Muḥammad Ṣūfī Āmulī Māzandarānī takhalluṣ Muḥammad and Ṣūfī (d. 1035/1625-6) along with Mīrzā Ḥasan Bayg takhalluṣ Khākī, in RY 49 of the Timurid (Mughal) Emperor Akbar I (d. 1014/1605), equating to 1010/1601-2. The work was later revised and amplified, but there is no evidence in the present copy of later additions, especially the reviser’s preface, as well as the altered number and order of poets. The substantial introductory portion is missing, beginning midway into the selection for Khusraw, and is equally defective at the end. Not dated at end. Intermittent foliation in pencil. Part of a much larger volume with Persian foliation beginning 527 and ending 634. Text arranged on two columns flowing into outer margins, written in alternating diagonal orientations. Neat to rough scribal nastaʿlīq-i khafī. Occasionally, rubrication is in two nastaʿlīq and shikastah āmīz hands written in at least two phases. Lacking original binding. Paper dust wrapper (BEIC legal publication on Regulation XVII for September 1817); partial watermarks (S & C Wise, 1814); labels, torn and stained. Folios unbound; cropped, water and fungal stains, extensive wormholes, later repairs. The central area of the manuscript appears to have been injured very early, with paper patches applied and missing text supplied in a hand very close, if not identical, to that of the original scribe. Condition extremely fragile.
