Notes
This work contains 5963 hadiths. It is one of the Four Books and one of the most credible Shiite books which is compiled in six volumes. Since its time of creation, it has always been acknowledged and received by Shiite scholars, who have continously refered to and cited from it in their short or long hadith collections. Shaykh Ṣaddūq has authored this book upon a request from one of the sayyids of the city of Balkh, called Sharīf al-Dīn Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad bin Ḥusayn, known as Niʿmat. He had requested Shaykh Ṣaddūq to write a book on Islamic jurisprudence similar to the medical book of Muḥammad ibn Zakariyā Rāzī, called "Man lā yaḥz̤uruh al-ṭabīb", so that it can be used by people who have no access to scholars and jurists.
