Airline transportation mode is known to be safer compared to other transportation modes. However, being safe is not just an outcome; it means a lot of effort is put in behind the scenes. Safe transportation refers to a process rather than an outcome and requires many stakeholders to think about safety and act safely. The motivation to reveal the factors affecting safety, which dates back to the 1950s, has made a lot of progress today and it has been understood that it can be achieved through the construction of a culture. Although the point to be reached with the formation of a safety culture and the internalization of the perception of safety varies depending on the context of the organizations, it can be said that the perspective is gained and the awareness of safe thinking increases.
Today, with the institutional pressures created by national and international authorities, safety culture is an issue that needs to be considered and continuous effort is required to implement it. Aviation safety, which attracts the attention of both practitioners and academics, is the main theme of this section of the book.
In this study, safety management system, safety culture, organizational trust and leadership issues that play an important role in the spread of culture are discussed specifically in the field of aviation. The information conveyed in the study was compiled from studies in the literature and was supported by practical standards, regulations and other publications frequently used by practitioners.
