Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds... As for what follows, when one of our brothers from the people of Andalusia, may God Almighty protect him, when he read to me my letter (The result of what is required in working with a quarter of pockets) in the month of Shawwal in the year eight hundred and fifty, he asked me to record in these papers what he needed in planning the lines of shadows on the surfaces of marbles, walls, and similar plates, and the astronomical matters and mathematical works on which the planning work is based.
