Notes
Al-Azzawi mentioned in his book The History of Astronomy in Iraq, p. 233, a treatise on the absent sine called the sine circle, and he said that it was an invention of Ibn al-Siraj al-Yamani. He referred to what Corkis Awad mentioned about a letter entitled The Absent Astrolabe and the Absent Pocket by Ibn al-Sarraj himself, and perhaps the aforementioned letter is the same as our letter above. There is a copy of it in Berlin, No. 5799/1. The author organized his book into an introduction, ten chapters, and a conclusion. Introduction to the machine statement. The first chapter is about knowing how to take the height. The second chapter is about knowing the pocket. The third chapter is about knowing the shadow from the height. Chapter Four: Knowing the slope of the degree. Chapter Five: Knowing the width from the slope. Chapter Six: Knowing the dimension of the diameter. Chapter Seven: Knowing half of the surplus. Chapter Eight: Knowing the azimuth. Chapter Nine: Knowing the azimuth of the circle’s virtue. Chapter Ten: Knowing deviation. The conclusion is to know the width of rivers and the depth of wells. It has corrections.
