Notes
Under the cover of the manuscript there are two lines in the Syriac language. The manuscript contains many errors in spelling and parsing. The book is somewhat similar to Hunayn’s issues, as he mentions the question and gives an answer to it. Such as his saying: “What is the definition of medicine?... What is the nature of the eye?” Among medicines: How can one extract the strength of medicines by analogy? There is nothing new or original in the book, but rather it is an arrangement and collection of what was mentioned before by many authors in the medical industry, and it contains both good and bad information. Ibn Abi Usaibah, Part 1: 301-302, says about the author that he served Caliph Al-Nasir (r. 1180-1225). See also The Gift of the Knowing People, Part 1: 391. The story of this, as the author narrates it in Intikhab al-Iqtazab, and as narrated by Ibn Abi Usaibah, is that the Caliph Al-Nasir had a pebble (or pebbles) in his bladder, and he was in great pain, and his recovery was at the hands of this Abu Nasr Saeed, so Al-Nasir honored him and enjoyed favor in his time. There is no doubt that he was alive at the time of Al-Mustansir’s caliphate (1226-42), and perhaps he witnessed the fall of Baghdad. At the hands of the Tatars, led by Hulagu, in 1258 AD. See Wustenfeld, p. 103-4, and Brockelmann, vol. 1 Waimar, 1898, p. 491. The author of (Kashf al-Zunun), vol. 1: 129-130, states that this book, Intikhab al-Iqtab, is a summary or selections from the book al-Iqtab, on the path of question and answer in medicine. There is a copy of Intikhab al-Iqtisab in the Oriental Library in Beirut No. 307. Another copy was examined in Father Sibat’s collection, dated to the date of its transfer in the year 1082 AH. There is a copy in Oxford and a fourth in Munich. The book discusses, in a group, the science of medicine and its parts, the elements and humors, the simple and complex parts of the body, the identities and places, and the causes of illnesses and their treatment.
