Notes As for who is more deserving of the caliphate after the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, the Shiite doctrine is that Ali is more deserving of the verse, which is his saying: “Your guardian is only God and His Messenger and those who believe....” The Mu’tazila and Kharijites believed that he was Abu Bakr, then Omar, then Othman, then Ali.
