After it was narrated on the authority of Abu al-Darda’, may God be pleased with him, that the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Whoever memorizes forty hadiths from my nation concerning matters of their religion, God will appoint him as a jurist, and I will be his intercessor and witness on the Day of Resurrection,” so I set about collecting forty hadiths.
