The Sheikh, Imam, and scholar, Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ibn Ishaq al-Zajjaji, the grammarian, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said: The categories of speech are three: a noun, a verb, and a letter that comes with a meaning. The noun is whatever it is permissible to be a subject, an object, or a letter attached to it.
