And after that, a group of well-educated jurists and scholars who agreed upon me in the knowledge of Arabic in the Nizamiyya school - may God preserve its foundations and have mercy on its builder - asked me to summarize for them a nice book that includes the controversial issues between Al-Shafi’i and Abu Hanifa, to be the first book written in the science of Arabic in this order and written in this style, because it is an order to which no one of the predecessors has added anything to it nor has any one of its successors amended it, so I intended to answer them according to their question. I endeavored to assist them in fulfilling their request and opened the path, and I mentioned from the doctrine of each group what the people of investigation relied upon, and for my support I relied on what I adhered to from the doctrine of the people of Kufa and Basra as a matter of fairness and not fanaticism and extravagance, seeking God’s protection and assistance in what I intended.
