Notes
Almagest...a Greek word that means arrangement. The book Almagest is one of the best works written in the body, and on it the books written on this art were relied upon. It was written by Ptolemy al-Faluzi the Wise in thirteen articles, and the first person to interpret it and translate it into Arabic was Yahya ibn Khalid ibn Barmak, then it was transmitted by Hunayn ibn Ishaq and edited by al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf and Thabit ibn Qurra during the reign of al-Ma’mun (Al-Fihrist, p. 327, Al-Kashf 2/1594). The author is a mathematician and astronomer from Andalusia, from the people of Cordoba. He was in the East during the days of Nasir al-Din al-Tusi and worked with him in the observatory in “Maragha.” Among his works are: The Book of Stars, The Book of the Useful Introduction to the Rulings of Births, The Book of al-Jami’ al-Saghir fi Ahkam al-Azm al-Azum, The Umdat al-Hasib, and Ghaniyat al-Talib. The book “Taj Al-Azyaj” and “Ghanyat Al-Muhtaj” and others. The book is a summary of the book Almagest by Ptolemy al-Faluzi the Wise, by the great Catholic Abu al-Faraj Griephorius ibn Harun al-Malti. [It was mentioned at the beginning of this version that Ptolemy was named Al-Faluzi in reference to the city of Al-Faluzi from the fifth peninsula of the Roman lands, called Bakiladhi, between it and Pergamis, a distance of 3 days. It was mentioned in Nuzhat al-Ruh wa Rawdat al-Afrah that Ptolemy’s birth and origin was in Alexandria in Egypt. The author wrote it in ten articles: the first article in 12 chapters. The second article has 10 chapters and includes astronomical tables. The third article in 6 chapters. The fourth article is about the conditions of the moon and how to correct its movements. This article includes tables of the movement of the mean for the center of rotation of the moon, and it is in seven chapters. The fifth article in 16 chapters includes astronomical tables. The sixth article in 6 chapters. The seventh article in 6 chapters. The eighth article in 10 chapters, the ninth article in 21 chapters. The tenth article in 10 chapters. I wrote from a copy dated 695 AH 1296 AD.
