Notes
The manuscript is a summary of the second section of Miftah al-Ulum by the scholar Abu Yaqoub Siraj al-Din Yusuf al-Sakaki (626 AH/1229 AD). It is a well-known text on rhetoric, the introduction to which states: “Because the science of rhetoric and its sources is for the sake of the sciences the most important, and the most precise, secret, since through it the subtleties of Arabic and its secrets are known, and the aspects of the miracle in the arrangement of the Qur’an reveal its secrets. The third section of the Key to the Sciences, which was compiled by the distinguished scholar Abu Yaqoub Yusuf al-Sakaki, may God have mercy on him, was the most useful of the famous books he wrote, because it was the best arranged, the most complete in editing, and the most useful. The principles are collected, but they are not protected from tautology, length, and complexity, and are amenable to abbreviation, lacking in clarity and intonation. Therefore, I wrote a summary that includes what it contains of the rules and includes what is needed of examples and evidence. I did not exert any effort in verifying and refining it, and I arranged it in an order that is closer to its meaning than its arrangement, and I did not exaggerate in abbreviating almost a word in order to use it, in order to make it easier for those who seek it to understand, and I added to that benefits that I found in some books. And additions that I have not been able to declare or point to in anyone’s speech, and I called it a summary of the key...” This book is organized into an introduction and three arts: The first art is the science of meanings, and it contains eight chapters: conditions of attribution, conditions of the predicate, conditions of the predicate, conditions of verb-relatives, shortening, construction, separation and connection, brevity and redundancy, and equality. The second art is the science of rhetoric, which includes: the sections of simile, metaphor, and metonymy. The third art is the science of the exquisite. He left a margin of 3.5 cm wide with explanations, comments, corrections, and corrections in varying fonts. The copy was written during the author's lifetime.
