Praise be to God who sent down the Qur’an to His servant so that he might be a warner to the worlds. So, with the shortest of its surahs, he challenged the clamors of the great Arab orators, but he did not find any power in it... And yet, the greatest of all sciences is in magnitude and the highest in honor and illumination; The science of interpretation, which is the head and head of the religious sciences... I have always told myself to compile in this art a book that contains the best of what has reached me from the great Companions, the scholars of the Successors, and the righteous predecessors below them... intending to label it, after I have completed it, with the lights of revelation and the secrets of interpretation.
