Notes The sources mentioned the author’s death in the year 170 AH/786 AD, and according to the study of Dr. Nouri al-Qais, his death occurred around the year 400 AH after he read the poetry of Al-Jamhara, which represents a distinguished critical era in choosing poems and naming the book, after it wrote a group of books at the end of the third century AH and bore this name, such as Jamaharat Al-Lughah by Ibn Duraid, who died in 321 AH. The collection of proverbs by Al-Askari, who died in 395 AH, and the collection of genealogies by Ibn Hazm, who died in 456 AH. We favored the latter opinion in confirming his death. This book included Arab poems in pre-Islamic times and early Islam, amounting to (49) poems. This version includes poems that were not included in Al-Jamhara, and Father Anastas Al-Karmali wrote at the beginning that it is “The Elite Poetry of the Arabs,” a narration by Abu Hatim on the authority of Al-Asma’i, with another indication by him that this book might be “A Collection of Arab Poetry.” Scientific accuracy compels us to include the book within the framework of poetic anthologies because it is closer to it and closer to it. We placed it under the title “The Collection of Arab Poetry” to make it easy to refer to it as it includes a section of the collection.
