The copyist mentioned on the front of the book that the book is by Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Balkhi, and the name of this author is not found in the sources. It is stated in the digital directory of the Sulaymaniyah Library that the book marked with pictures of the Islamic regions is the same book attributed to Ahmad ibn Sahl Abi Zaid al-Balkhi, who died in the year 322 AH.

Praise be to God, who is praised by His grace, who is thanked for His blessings and oaths, and may God’s blessings and peace be upon the best of His creation, Muhammad, and the righteous of his family. As for what follows, I have written this book with a description of the shapes of the earth and its extent in length and breadth, the regions of the countries, the place of population among them, and the urbanization of all the countries of Islam, detailing their cities and dividing what is unique to the works collected in them.
