Notes The Forty Hadiths of Al-Nawawi stated in his introduction that, following the example of the great imams and scholars, he collected forty hadiths covering all branches of the fundamentals of religion, jihad, asceticism, etiquette, and sermons, and each hadith is a great rule in the foundations of religion. He also said that most of his hadiths that he cited were in Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
