Notes In it, the author talks about “the four diligent imams” and begins by mentioning a large group of people of the doctrine in the various countries of Islam. Then, in the first chapter, he talks about the virtues of Imam Abu Hanifa al-Nu’man, who was born in Kufa in the year eighty of the Hijra, and who died in Baghdad in the year one hundred and fifty. He describes his personality and morals and how people from all countries migrated to him, and he narrated on the authority of a large group from all the countries of Islam. Then he praises his piety, worship, intellect, chivalry, and noble deeds. His morals and his prowess in hadith, and his preoccupation with jurisprudence and his codification of it, and he concludes by mentioning his ordeal, his flogging with the whip, and then his death. He speaks in the second chapter about the virtues of Imam Malik bin Anas, who was born in the year ninety and died in the year 179 AH. He follows the same line in describing and praising his knowledge, and mentions those who narrated from him, and what was mentioned in his praise. Then he mentions the book “Al-Muwatta” and his scholarly status, and concludes by mentioning his ordeal, and he speaks in the third chapter. On the merits of Imam Muhammad bin Idris al-Shafi’i, who was born in the year 150 AH and died in Fustat in the year 204 AH. This is followed by the talk in the fourth chapter on the merits of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, who was born in the year 169 AH and who died in the year 169 AH. 201 AH. He describes his personality, mentions those who narrated from him, the imams’ praise of him, his humility and good morals, his turning away from the judiciary, his piety and idle altruism, his care for fatwas, hadith and classification, and his turning away from the people of innovations. Then he mentions his ordeals and what happened to him with al-Ma’mun and al-Mu’tasim and then al-Wathiq from imprisonment and beatings, and he concludes by talking about the reason why many of the greatest Sufi scholars chose his doctrine.
