Notes
A book on the language, perhaps - as stated in Ibn Qutaybah’s Faharas al-Dhahiriyya above. He lived virtuous and confident in his religion and culture. He left valuable works, but in the sources we reviewed there was no mention of this Book of Germs, or anything that indicates the possibility of attributing it to him, except for Brockelmann’s mention of this particular copy in his book Arabic Literature among the Works of Ibn Qutaybah. The manuscript includes many sections after its linguistic introduction: the section on the soul, the body, and the person, the section on colors, and the section on tongues, speech, sounds, and silence. The book on women and their descriptions and other things, and the chapter on fascination, astonishment, qiyafa, flying, and amulets. And the chapter on what is good and bad, clothing and nudity, the chapters on food and its colors, meat and its processing, and feeding people, the chapters on milk and drink, the chapter on residence, tarrying, adherence, imitation, and so on... A chapter on anecdotes such as Hasab, Ashir, and Qasar... and nature, entertainment, and gambling. And another chapter of anecdotes, the narration of a man without his will... and a chapter on backpacks, their tools, and utensils while traveling, in urban areas, homes, houses, hideaways, and buildings. A door that brings together the doors of evil, small and large... The door of times, the winds, and the names of eternity... The door of clouds, rain, and the valley, the door of the mountains, the lands, the deserts, and medicines. The book of palm trees and generosity. Book about horses and their descriptions, weapons and their handling, and weapons and their descriptions. This is followed by the book of beasts, beasts, wild animals, birds, vermin, and insects of the earth. The chapter on anecdotes of nouns, the chapter on anecdotes of verbs, and finally the chapter on defects in poetry and the names of rhymes [?]. The names of its chapters are written with a capital letter. Leave a 3 cm wide margin with some commentary.
Sample Text
