Over 500 years ago, driven out by the Spanish Inquisition, Ismael Diadié's ancestors left Al-Andalus, the Moorish name for the Iberian Peninsula, for Timbuktu, in Mali. They became guardians of an ancient Islamic library, a legacy of over 12,000 scientific, poetic and religious manuscripts, which they wanted to protect at all costs. However, in 2012, Ansar Dine Salafi fighters and their Al-Qaeda allies surrounded Diadié's house and threatened to destroy his library. Desperate to save the manuscripts, Diadié fled from Timbuktu to Granada, Spain, escaping death. Driven by war, he retraced the path started five centuries ago by Ali Ben Ziyad Al Qutí, who left fanaticism behind in Toledo.
